Signs You Need Professional Skunk Removal

Seeing a skunk near your property doesn't automatically mean you need professional removal services. Skunks are often just passing through, and they may not set up a den on your property. However, they are creatures of habit. If a skunk finds a reliable food source or a safe place to den, it may stick around. At that point, it becomes a threat to everyone on the property. Skunks can spray you or your pets with their powerful, foul-smelling spray, and they can spread diseases like rabies, leptospirosis, and tularemia. Their dens can also cause structural instability.

Do not wait to schedule a professional inspection if you notice any of the following signs of skunks on your property: 

• Distinctive odor. The most obvious sign of a skunk's presence is its unmistakable odor. While a brief whiff might mean a skunk recently passed by, a persistent, strong smell around your home or in your yard suggests a skunk is denning nearby. 
• Damage to your lawn or garden. Skunks love to dig for grubs and insects. You may notice small, cone-shaped holes or divots in your lawn. These are typically one to three inches deep and are a clear indication that a skunk is foraging for food. 
• Paw prints and tracks. Skunk tracks have five toes on both their front and back feet, along with visible claw marks. Their front tracks are often splayed, and they may appear to walk flat-footed, leaving distinct impressions in soft soil or mud. We can use these tracks to locate dens.
• Piles of dug-up dirt. When a skunk dens under a deck, porch, or shed, it will often leave a pile of dirt near the entrance. This pile of excavated soil can be a key indicator that they have made a home on your property.
• Skunk sightings at odd times. Skunks are primarily nocturnal, so seeing one during the day is unusual. A skunk that appears dazed, disoriented, or overly aggressive in the daytime may have rabies or another illness. If you see a skunk acting strangely, do not approach it.
